bean with today's gardeners. It was originally grown in 1864 and

- From 1892 - These medium sized dark red beets are the most popular

- 18-20 inch plants produce medium sized dark green heads that can
be harvested and the plant will continue to grow many edible side
shoots over the growing season.
Brussels Sprouts - Long Island
Improved (800 seeds) - This is the most popular heirloom
Brussels Sprouts grown. Once a mainstay in most gardens, Brussels
Sprouts have started regaining popularity again Each plant can yield

- 1900s - A heavy yielder of sweet 5-7 inch carrots...even in poor

- 6-8 in. A great fresh-eating carrot that is very sweet. Also
stores well and is almost coreless.
Cauliflower - Snowball (350 seeds)
- Large white heads mature about 1 1/2 weeks earlier than other
varieties. Nice solid heads with a great flavor.
Celery - Golden Pascal (50 seeds)
- Tender string less stalks have a great flavor. Disease resistant.
Corn, Sweet - Golden Bantum (225
seeds) - This variety is an improved version of the old
standard yellow sweet corn. Instead of eight rows, this variety has
ten to fourteen rows and the ears are slightly longer. It was
improved to stay tender longer.
Cucumber - Straight Eight (120 seeds)
- A great slicer...nice 5-7" long cucumbers have a great flavor and
produce well.
Cucumber - Boston Pickling (120
seeds) - 1880 - Also called National Pickling. A heavy
producer of medium sized 5-6 inch cukes with black spines. Great
for pickling. Pick cucumbers before they get too large and begin to
yellow.
Eggplant - Black Beauty (100 seeds)
- 1902 - This variety is the most widely grown eggplant in American
gardens. 1-3 lb glossy black fruit are 6-8 inches long. Plants
average 4-6 fruits.
Herb, Basil - Genovese (75 seeds)
- 24"-36" plants can be cut all summer. Dry the leaves for winter
use.
Herb, Cilantro - Slow Bolt (300
seeds) - Great for seasoning Mexican and Indian cuisine.
Will germinate well in cool weather. Replant every 3-4 weeks to
keep crop going until late fall.
Herb, Oregano - Italian (75 seeds)
- 12" high plants can be planted in waves and cut throughout the
summer/fall. Great dried for winter.

(2500 seeds) - Flavorful dark green leaves. Very loose
heads. Great for salads or as garnish.

- 1894 - Compact heads with light green leaves and a rouge border.
Disease resistant.
Lettuce, Leaf - Black Seeded Simpson
(2500 seeds) - 1850 - One of the most popular loose leaf
lettuces still today. Large light green plants produce tender leaves
that are crisp and not bitter. Direct seed outdoors.
Lettuce, Leaf - Oakleaf (2500 seeds)
- 1800's - Medium dark green leaves are shaped similar to oak
leaves. Plants are slow to bolt and is well suited for hot summers.
Melons, Cantaloupe - Hale's Best
Jumbo (50 seeds) - Large, oval, ribbed cantaloupe with heavy
netting and fine textured, bright orange flesh. Drought tolerant.
Melons, Cantaloupe - Hearts of Gold
(50 seeds) - 1917 - 3-4 lb fruits are dark green and heavily
netted. Prolific plants are more resistant to blight than other
varieties. Produces dark orange flesh that is very sweet and
flavorful.
Onions - Red Burgandy (800 seeds)
- 3-4 inch diameter onions are dark red in color and make great
slicers for hamburgers or chopped in salsa or chili. Grows well in
the north.
Onions - Yellow Sweet Spanish (800
seeds) - Large oblong onions have a yellowish brown skin and
yellow flesh. A standard kitchen variety that is a good general
purpose onion that has good keeping qualities. Sweet and mild
flavored.
Parsnip - Harris Model (800 seeds)
- 15" long smooth white parsnip with almost no side roots. Sweet and
slightly nutty flavor. Can be left in ground over winter without
protection for spring use.
Peas, Garden - Lincoln (500 seeds)
- These peas withstand heat and wilt very well. 6-9 peas per pod.
Great for freezing.
Peas, Garden - Wando (500 seeds)
- Two foot tall plants have bush habit an do not require a trellis.
Plants bear loads of 3" long pods with 7-9 dark green peas each.
Peas, Snap - Sugar Snap (500 seeds)
- All American Selection winner. 3 inch long pods are thick and
plentiful. Vines will grow up to 6 foot tall and are best served
with a trellis. Plant in garden five weeks before last spring frost.
Fall planting can also be done approximately 11 weeks before the
first fall frost.
Peas, Snow - Oregon Giant (500 seeds)
- Produces giant, tender snow peas. This is one of the best
producing snow peas. Pick early and frequently, while pods are still
flat.
Pepper, Hot - Cayenne Long Red (40
seeds) - Long thin hot peppers start out as green then turn a
shade of orange before a dark red when ripe.
Pepper, Hot - Jalapeno (40 seeds)
- 3" long blocky green peppers. Will turn red when fully ripe.
Good for salsas and chopped in dishes if you want to add some heat.
Pepper, Hot - Sante Fe Grand (40
seeds) - 2" long green hot peppers. Great for cooking and
drying for flakes.
Pepper, Sweet - California Wonder (40
seeds) - A traditional green blocky pepper. 24 inch plants
produce a good quantity of peppers with thick walls and a mild
pepper flavor. Good stuffed or cut in strips for fresh eating.
Pumpkin - Connecticut Field (20
seeds) - 1700's - This is an extremely old heirloom grown by
American Indians during the early days of our country. Produces
20-25 lb. pumpkins.
Radish - Crimson Giant (900 seeds)
- A bright red radish that produce some of the largest round
radishes ever! Stays sweet and flavorful even when large.
Radish - French Breakfast (900 seeds)
- 1879 - 2 inch long blunt tipped radishes are bright red in color
with a white tip. A good flavored radish that is a nice alternative
to the standard globe shaped varieties.
Radish - White Icicle (900 seeds)
- 5-6 inch long white tapered radishes have a crisp mild flavored
flesh. A favorite with chefs.
Rutabaga - American Purple Top (900
seeds) - 1920 - 4-6 inch round roots have purplish-red
shoulders and a cream colored body. Yellow colored flesh is solid
and mild flavored. Good keeping qualities.
Spinach - Bloomsdale Long Standing
(625 seeds) - 1925 - This is the most widely planted Spinach
in the United States. Dark green crumpled leaves are great for
salads. Plants are strong growers and tolerant to summer heat. Slow
bolting provides longer harvest period. Full of nutrition.
Squash, Summer - Crookneck Early
Summer (25 seeds) - 1700's - This heirloom dates back to the
1700's and is still a very popular variety today with market growers
and home gardeners. Bright yellow fruits are covered with warts.
Flesh is sweet and finely grained.
Squash, Summer - Zucchini, Black
Beauty (25 seeds) - 1931 - Bush type plants are fast growing
and very prolific. Pick squash when they are 5-6 inches long to
promote additional setting. Great flavor and tender flesh. This is
the most widely grown squash in American gardens.
Squash, Winter - Waltham Butternut
(20 seeds) - Buff colored 4-5 lb. squash that are solid with
meat and a small bulbous seed cavity. Sweet orange flesh is ideal
for baking and freezing.
Squash, Winter - Blue Hubbard (15
seeds) - 1800's - Light grayish Blue squash are long and
tapered at both ends and can weigh up to 25-30 lbs! Dry orange flesh
has a great flavor and is one of our favorites for freezing. Squash
need to be sliced or broken into chunks for baking.
Squash, Winter - Table Queen (20
seeds) - Table Queen is a green-shelled variety that
resembles an acorn in shape. They are about six inches in diameter
at maturity. Very prolific, a good keeper, and great for cutting in
half and baking.
Swiss Chard - Luccullus (150 seeds)
- 1750 - A large growing plant with dark green crumpled leaves.
Good flavor on this high yielding variety that withstands mild
frosts.
Tomato, Heirloom - Cherokee Purple
(50 seeds) - 8-12 oz. pink-purple fruits are crack free and
disease resistant.
Tomato, Heirloom - Homestead (100
seeds) - A high yielding variety that produces some of the
nicest uniform red tomatoes around. Solid tomatoes are juicy with an
average amount of seeds.
Tomato, Heirloom - Pink Ponderosa (50
seeds) - A productive pink beefsteak tomato offered by Peter
Henderson & Co. at the turn of the century. Good yields make this
flavorful variety a good choice.
Tomato, Heirloom - Reisentraube (50
seeds) - Of German origin meaning "bunch of grapes". Huge
clusters of red pointed cherries (30-40 per cluster) make this a
truly unique variety. Cherries resist cracking and are quite juicy
and flavorful.
Tomato, Heirloom - Yellow Pear (100
seeds) - This is from the plant that took over one of our
raised beds....a single plant produced over 1100 1/4 oz. bright
yellow pear shaped tomatoes. These have an excellent flavor and can
be used in salads or eaten right from the garden. We even made
yellow tomato sauce with these...how gourmet.

seeds) - Another one of our favorites...12-24 oz. tomatoes
that have an excellent mild flavor and an outstanding yield!!!

Tomato, Heirloom - Red Pear (50
seeds) - Similar to its yellow cousin, this plant produces
100's and 100's of 1/4 oz. red pear shaped fruits. Mix these in
with the yellow version and have a great salad that rivals a gourmet
restaurant.

Lifter (50 seeds) - Very large pinkish-red fruits that are
very meaty with few seeds. Good producer in drought stricken areas.

seeds) - Plants produce a good quantity of purple/black
cherry tomatoes that have a flavor that resembles Black Krim. Plants
bore fruit up through October here in Ohio.
Turnip - Purple Top White Globe (1200
seeds) - 1800's - The most popular turnip in American Gardens
today.
Leaves will grow up to two feet tall. Creamy white roots are
flattened in shape with purple shoulders.
Watermelon - Charleston Grey (50
seeds) - Oblong melons reach 25-30 lbs. Grayish green skin
Red and juicy watermelon is a summertime favorite.

- Oblong melons reach 25-30 lbs. Dark and light green stripes
